Lightweight Block Ensures Safety for Elementary School Students

Thanks to block and concrete supplied by Kirkpatrick North, students at Caldwell Elementary in Scottsboro, AL, are now benefiting from a safer, more comfortable learning environment.

The $9.97 million project, designed by architect Nola Vanpeursem and constructed by Tolar Construction, utilized 32,000 lightweight concrete masonry units and 1,400 cubic yards of concrete, according to Spencer Glassco, General Manager of Kirkpatrick North.

A standout feature of the addition is a storm shelter, built within a reinforced block hallway. The shelter is capable of housing the entire student body, along with faculty and staff. “We’re pleased that our block and concrete are contributing to a safe, modern learning environment for the children of Scottsboro,” Glassco said.

The new addition, which opened for the 2024/25 school year, spans approximately 14,000 square feet and includes an expanded gym, ten classrooms, student restrooms, faculty restrooms, workrooms, storage areas, and mechanical and electrical rooms.

The gym, which takes up 10,000 square feet of the new addition, includes approximately 8,500 square feet dedicated to a student play area, more than doubling the size of the current gym’s play space. The expansion also features a coach’s office, additional restrooms for students and faculty, a storage area, an electrical room, a mezzanine, and a vestibule.
