Redefining Plant Traffic Patterns
New yard signage directing drivers where to enter, which way to head, and where to exit is improving safety and boosting efficiency at KCI batch plants in the Central Division based in Birmingham.
Keith Rickles, general manager at Kirkpatrick’s Central Division, said “when we had drivers from different plants coming in, a lot of them were entering the yard from various directions.
“We’ve had cross traffic, and a lot of the accidents we've had over the last couple of years have been from that cross traffic. It just gets congested in areas. And in most places, we have unidirectional, or one-way traffic. So we’re putting signage up to explain to everyone very clearly that you enter this way, head this direction, get staged in this area, and exit here.” Rickles said.
“The bottom line is that we’re doing it for safety”, he said, adding that “the second benefit is that it’s more efficient.”
