5 Principles of the Smith System for Driver Training
Drivers in Georgia recently underwent instruction in the Smith System, a nationally recognized training program and during 2024, drivers from Kirkpatrick will join their Walker counterparts in the special sessions.
The Smith System for Drivers is a widely recognized methodology for safe driving that emphasizes awareness and proactive accident prevention. Developed in 1952 by Harold Smith, it is designed to help drivers avoid collisions by teaching them to anticipate dangerous situations. The system is based on five key principles, often summarized as "The Five Keys to Space Cushion Driving." These principles are:
- Aim High in Steering: This principle encourages drivers to look farther ahead than usual.
- Get the Big Picture: Drivers are trained to monitor their surroundings, including other vehicles and overall road conditions.
- Keep Your Eyes Moving: By continuously scanning the road, checking mirrors, and looking ahead, drivers can avoid tunnel vision.
- Leave Yourself an Out: This principle involves positioning the vehicle in such a way the driver has an escape route in case of an emergency.
- Make Sure They See You: Drivers are taught to ensure other motorists on the road are aware of their presence.
